Are curses real? The short answer is… there usually isn’t one.
In a world filled with digital predators and physical violence all around us, the last thing most of us want to think about is that there could be something energetically lurking around the corner or under the bed.
We cannot say that curses don’t exist, but we can say they are not as common as one would think. Most of the time, just like a suspected demon haunting, the circumstances or situation will have a perfectly logical explanation.
In the old days, all it would take was one or two disgruntled townspeople to go to the village square and spread the rumor of a hex or curse. They’d claim a spell was thrown at them just because someone else had a prettier daughter or a goat that gave more milk.
Today, most modern cultures would laugh at that. But should we so easily dismiss something that has roots in so many traditions across the globe?
Some cultures have such a deep-seated fear of negative energy that they carry charms and talismans to ward off any potential evil sent their way. They place them in their homes, on their loved ones, and even on their pets and livestock.
What is the Difference Between a Jinx, Hex, and Curse?
Let’s backtrack for a moment. First of all, what exactly is a jinx, hex, or curse? And how do you tell them apart?
All three are forms of negative energy "thrown" by another person who believes you have slighted them. Through malicious words, intentions, or gestures, they can impact your energy in a negative way. The severity usually depends on the vindictive nature of the person throwing it and the size of the perceived injustice.
A Jinx: This is something that causes minor, temporary annoyance. Think of it like someone experiencing a streak of petty bad luck because they spoke negatively about someone else.
A Hex: A hex goes a bit deeper. While it can still be temporary, it causes genuine misfortune, disruption, or minor harm. Frequent, inexplicable bad luck is a key sign of a hex.
A Curse: This is the worst of the three. A curse is cast with the deliberate intention of causing severe harm, ruin, or even death. Curses are heavy, complex, and can linger into future generations.
Are Curses Real, and Can They Affect You?
But the real question is: are they real, and can you or your family actually be affected by them?
Many families have stories of people who did them wrong and suddenly found themselves inundated with terrible luck. One could say that this was karma—that they were simply getting back the exact energy they gave out. Others say it’s pure coincidence. And some believe it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy; by hearing a nasty curse, they subconsciously brought it to life.
Others still, unable to make logical sense of the timing or the way things transpired after a threat was uttered, will say "the evil eye" was cast on them, or that a malevolent force was sent to torment them.
The most common scenario I see is clients who believe a relative—usually a jealous in-law—is throwing bad vibes at them. Most of the time, fear is what feeds these notions. Controlling family members often know exactly how to use fear as a form of energetic terrorism.
I have also worked with clients who struggle to take accountability for their own actions. To avoid facing their own choices, they blame others and accuse an in-law, a neighbor, or even an innocent bystander of sending dark forces into their lives.
Common Spiritual and Physical Signs of a Curse or Hex
In some situations, there is no consoling or proving to a person that they aren't cursed. However, if you are looking for clarity, there are definitive, tell-tale signs of a curse to look out for:
Sudden, Drastic Life Shifts: Inexplicable job loss, sudden illness, or loved ones turning against you within days or hours of an aggressive or off-putting encounter.
Physical Objects Left Behind: Objects are frequently connected to hexes and curses. This might look like poppets left near your home, vials of "go away" oil, goofer dust spread across your doorstep, a small package of natural items or bones wrapped tightly in string, or a suspicious plant left on your porch steeped in graveyard dirt (unbeknownst to the victim, who assumes it’s a gift of peace). In my opinion, the absolute worst ones are cursed charms worn by the victims themselves—items that actively drain your energy while you wear them.
Physical and Mental Symptoms: When someone is actually under the influence of something as nasty as a curse, they simply don’t feel right. Their head feels foggy, and they may experience frequent headaches or a constant, throbbing pressure that won't leave them alone. Sleep is also heavily affected, and nightmares will drastically increase.
Repetitive Patterns (The Looping): For me, the biggest sign of a generational curse is "the looping." With generational curses, we see a repetitive, cyclic pattern. People in the family die at the exact same age, marriages always end after a specific number of years, or fortunes are quickly gained but can never be held.
The movie Practical Magic (one of my absolute favorites!) is beautifully based on this concept of a generational curse, where the men the Owens sisters marry are doomed to die when the deathwatch beetle calls.
How to Break a Curse, Hex, or Jinx
While jinxes and hexes can usually be broken with a simple candle ritual or a protective verse, true curses are much trickier. There is always a loophole, but it has to be figured out like a puzzle. Someone has to take a specific action to break it, and sometimes, only an experienced spiritual practitioner can undo the damage.

Although a perfect cultural match isn’t strictly necessary in most cases, I find that cultural correspondences are always the strongest. If you are Catholic, a priest might be called; if you are Jewish, a rabbi; if you are Latino, you might seek out a traditional curandero or curandera.
I once worked a case where a woman had a severe spiritual attachment. It turned out to be a big ol' Russian Orthodox priest who did not like women… at all! I remember we advised her to find a practitioner from that specific cultural background, as it would be much easier for them to handle and far less painful for her to clear.
Is it a Curse, or is it Spiritual Realignment?
But understand this… before you go racing to a medicine man or woman, make sure you aren't just going through a major life transition. Sometimes, your energies are simply realigning.
Ask yourself: Have I recently done some deep healing work or a personal ceremony? Have I been asking the universe to rid me of what no longer serves me, and now the things standing in the way of my growth are being forcibly removed? (For example, you ask to be happy, so your unhealthy relationship abruptly ends).
Sometimes, when we ask for positive change, our world has to look like it’s falling apart first. The things blocking you from a healthier life need to be cleared out. Sometimes that process is fast, ugly, and feels exactly like you're being cursed!
It doesn’t mean you are. In fact, eight or nine times out of ten, people are not cursed. It just means you are finally on the right path.
And how do you know for sure? Because you can still feel the love inside. You still wake up and know that no matter what chaos is happening around you, you still have hopes, plans, and people who support you. Know this: even if someone tries to send bad vibes your way, your absolute greatest protection is your own love. Love for yourself, your world, your friends, and your family.
