How to Prepare for a Psychic Reading: A Practical Checklist

Wondering how to prepare for your psychic reading? Angel Morgan shares a practical checklist — what to do the week before, the day of, and the questions to bring (and the ones to skip) so you walk in clear and ready.

How to Prepare for a Psychic Reading: A Practical Checklist

The short answer

You don't need to prepare spiritually or do anything elaborate before a psychic reading. The most useful preparation is practical: arrive rested, know roughly what you want clarity on, bring questions if you like, and clear a quiet hour where you won't be interrupted. If you remember only one thing, remember this — readings work best when you're open and grounded, not when you're braced or tested.

The rest of this article is the checklist I send my own clients before their first session with me. It covers the week before, the day of, the questions that actually work, and what to avoid in the 24 hours leading up to your reading.

Why preparation matters (it's not what you think)

Most people ask about preparation because they want to make sure they get a "good" reading. The truth is, preparation doesn't change what comes through — that's not how readings work. What preparation does is help you receive what comes through clearly.

A rushed, defensive, or distracted client is not going to remember half of what was said. A prepared client walks away with specifics they can actually use. The goal of everything below is simple: make the hour of your reading as clear and uninterrupted as possible so that the information lands.

The week before your reading

You don't need to do anything dramatic. Just notice a few things.

Notice what you're actually thinking about. In the week leading up to your reading, pay attention to the questions that keep circling. What are you re-running in your head at 2am? What decision are you avoiding? That's usually where the most useful part of a reading happens — not with the questions you think you should ask, but with the ones you've been carrying.

Jot things down as they come up. You don't need a formal list. A notes app works. Anything that feels unresolved or quietly loud is worth writing down. You may end up using none of it in the session, but the act of noticing clears your own signal.

Don't research too much. This surprises people. Reading a dozen articles about psychic readings, watching YouTube videos of other people's sessions, or studying "how to spot a fake psychic" the night before tends to put you in an analytical, defensive state — which is the opposite of how a reading works best. One article (like this one) is enough.

The day of your reading

Setting up your space

Most readings happen virtually — by video or phone — so your environment matters more than you might think. I recommend:

  • A quiet room where you won't be interrupted for at least 60 minutes (90 is better so you aren't rushed after)
  • Good internet if you're on video, or a spot with strong signal if you're on phone
  • A notebook and pen, or a recording device (most practitioners will let you record — always ask first)
  • A glass of water within reach
  • Phone on do-not-disturb
  • If you live with other people, let them know you'll be unavailable

If you're doing an in-person session in Toronto, aim to arrive 10 minutes early rather than exactly on time. Rushing in the door doesn't give your nervous system time to settle, and readings work best when you're not braced.

Your physical state

You don't need to fast or meditate. What helps:

  • Eat a normal meal an hour or two before. Don't arrive hungry or full.
  • Drink water throughout the day
  • Skip the third coffee — a little caffeine is fine, a lot makes you scattered
  • Limit alcohol — one glass of wine the night before is fine, drinking within six hours of your reading is not
  • Get normal sleep. Don't stay up anxious about it.

Your emotional state

This is the part people overlook. Readings work better when you arrive open, not triggered. If possible, avoid:

  • Having a heated argument an hour before
  • Doomscrolling or watching the news immediately before
  • A high-stress meeting or difficult phone call right before

If something activating happens in the hour before your session, take a five-minute walk or do some slow breathing before you log on. You don't need to be zen — you just need to not walk in with your nervous system spiking.

Good questions to bring

Questions that work

Open-ended questions where you want insight, not just a yes/no, consistently produce the most useful readings. Try any of these as starting points:

  • What do I need to know about [specific situation or relationship] right now?
  • What am I not seeing in my [relationship / career / health] that I should be paying attention to?
  • Is there something my [deceased loved one / pet] wants me to know?
  • What does the next six months look like in terms of [career, move, health, relationship]?
  • What is my body or energy asking me to pay attention to?
  • What pattern keeps showing up in my life, and what's underneath it?

You don't need more than three to five questions prepared. In a 60-minute session, you'll usually only get through two or three in real depth.

What if you don't know what to ask?

You can arrive with nothing. Tell your practitioner you don't have specific questions — just that something is shifting in your life and you want to see what comes through. A good reader can work with that. In fact, some of my best sessions happen when a client arrives open rather than scripted.

What to avoid in the 24 hours before

Keeping this short because the list is short:

  • Heavy drinking
  • Substances that noticeably affect your processing or mood
  • A huge emotional blowup (if something happens, reschedule rather than push through)
  • Obsessive Googling about what to expect
  • Scheduling anything demanding for right after your reading — you want time to sit with what came through

That's it. No need to cleanse your home, smudge with sage, charge crystals, or do anything ceremonial unless that's already part of your own practice.

What to do with what comes through

Preparation doesn't end when the reading ends. How you handle what came through matters.

Record or take notes during the session (with permission — always ask). What you remember on the drive home and what you remember three weeks later are rarely the same.

Don't make major decisions in the first 24 hours. A good reading gives you information. You still make the call. Let the insights settle before you quit the job, end the relationship, or book the flight.

Re-read your notes a week later. This is where the real gold is. Details that didn't make sense on the day often click into place when a phone call, coincidence, or conversation confirms them.

Don't re-book immediately. Reputable practitioners want space between your sessions — usually a minimum of three to six months unless something specific is happening. If your reader is pushing a follow-up within days, that's a signal to pause.

Frequently asked questions

Should I write questions down before my reading? Two or three written questions help focus the session, but you don't need a long list. Arriving with a rough sense of what's weighing on you is usually enough.

Can I drink coffee or alcohol before a reading? A single coffee or tea is fine. Heavy caffeine makes you scattered. Skip alcohol within six hours of your session — it dulls your own ability to hear what's coming through.

What if I don't know what to ask? Come anyway. Tell your practitioner you're not sure where to start. A good reader can work with an open session, and sometimes the most useful readings happen when you arrive without an agenda.

Should I tell the psychic anything about myself beforehand? Only the basics — your first name and whether you've had a reading before. You don't need to share your birth date, your questions, or your context unless they ask. A good reader wants to see what comes through on their own before you fill in details.

Can I bring someone with me? For an in-person session, yes, if it's someone whose presence is grounding for you — not distracting. For a virtual session, it's usually better to be alone in the room. Either way, ask your practitioner first.

Ready when you are

If you've prepared this far, you're ready. When you'd like to book a private reading with me — by video, phone, or in person in Toronto — you can reach out directly.

If you're still not sure whether you want a psychic reading, a mediumship session, or an Akashic Records reading, send me a message. I'll tell you honestly which one I think will serve you best.
